Finally…some of the mainstream media is starting to report what many of us know to be so true: Mexico is a rapidly emerging country that bears no similarity to the bad press it has received for the past several years. Aside from a very few trouble areas it is a very safe country to live in and visit, and it has become the economic powerhouse of Latin America.

With the US on the brink of real immigration reform, it is more important than ever that more people understand the truth about our neighbor to the south. It will take many decades to get to all of them, which is very comforting to me. It’s good to have mysteries in our lives. Here is an example of a stone jaguar that was just discovered, weighing in at over a ton. http://www.mexicotoday.org/article/new-archaeological-discovery-2000-year-old-jaguar-adds-history-mexico . The next time you are in southern Mexico, get away from the city and the tourist track and go see some of the lesser known sites. You will feel the mystery.

I’ve been going to San Felipe in northern Baja since I was 14 years old. Although the town has changed somewhat it is still basically the small fishing village it was back then. My old friend Ralph Rubio was so inspired by the town’s fish tacos that he has built a restaurant chain based on that concept than now numbers nearly 200 stores. Here is a story about what you can find there today, still serving great tacos.

I first went to Taxco in 1974 on my way to backpacking to Belize and Guatemala. There were a few tourists in town, but not many. I remember some of the silver artisans were selling “coke spoons” (cocaine was becoming a popular drug at that time), but also silver pieces that were museum quality. I have since returned to this hillside town a few times over the years, and it still holds the fascination for me, wandering the steep cobble-stoned streets and remembering the history that dates back to the conquistadors. Here is an update from Mexico Today http://www.mexicotoday.org/article/pueblos-magicos-mountainside-city-taxco-jewel-guerrero-0

Read our good friend’s (Susie Albin-Najera) article on how to see Mexico in your car. I have driven tens of thousands of miles through the country and it is by far the best way to really learn about Mexico if you have the time. If you can’t drive all the way, fly to a major destination and rent a car. Prices are reasonable and there are thousands of miles of safe toll roads, although I like the smaller free roads to really get to the heart of Mexico.

Morelia, Michoacán, 10 July 2012.- President Calderón inaugurated the road pass at the exit to Quiroga.

The president declared that 130,000 vehicles will use the road pass every day and that traveling on a more comfortable, safer highway will reduce their traveling time by 20 minutes. Construction of this road work will benefit traffic from Morelia and long-distance traffic, currently forced to cross the city. He also declared that the reduction of time, noise and pollution will substantially improve the quality of life of Morelia’s inhabitants.

During his address, the president declared that this administration has given a record boost to the construction of infrastructure works, which will enable the state to progress and release its full potential. He explained that between 2007 and 2011, 6.6 billion pesos were invested in the modernization and construction of highways and country roads, such as the Road Pass at the exit to Charo, the Morelia-Salamanca highway, the Nueva Italia-Apatzingán highway and recently the start of the expansion of the Michoacán coastal road, among others.

The president announced that over a billion pesos have been invested in the modernization of Lázaro Cárdenas, turning it into the Pacific Port with the greatest commercial growth in the entire continent.
